Rio de Janeiro: Part 1 Exploring and People Watching

Allie and Nelson at Ipanema Beach

Ola! Nelson and Allie reporting live from lovely Rio de Janeiro! We are having so much fun here. We have done a lot of acclamation, people watching, relaxing, and taking it all in. Here our some of our first days in Rio! With Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf Mountain, the Botanical Gardens still to come! Ciao!

Nelson on our first day, taking it all in.
Strawberry Caipirinha, the national drink of Brazil
Traditional Caipirinha, made with sugar cane rum, sugar and lime. Very delicious and potent!
Allie at Copacabana Beach

Nelson enjoying la playa

Roasted chicken, a pico de gallo mix, fries, rice
Authentic chicken roasting restaurant
We obviously did not like it.
The Virgin Mary between two beer signs. Makes sense?
Allie on Avenida Atlantica
Copacabana Palace (not our place)
A modern studio apartment, two blocks from the beach (our place!)
Our bathroom
Nelson working the bar
Filet mignon, pico de gallo, rice, fries, and salad

Eating breakfast like a local in our kitchen
Sand sculptures

The last supper
Interesting work of sand art, with Christ the Redeemer praying over them! Allie definitely was yelled at in Portuguese for taking this photo without making a "donation".
Nelson on Ipanema beach
Interesting game of something we named soccer-volleyball. Turns out there is such thing as soccer volleyball. Kicking and heading the ball like soccer using the rules of volleyball. Pretty cool.

Parque Garota de Ipanema
Amazing trees along Avenida Atlantica
Luz. Nelson's mother's name. We see her with every few steps!
We wish we could speak Portuguese to know what these protesters wanted. All we know is they wanted responsibility to be taken.
The mountains peeking down a side street.
Cocos
Even the dogs like the cocos
More caipirinhas
The mountains slicing through the low clouds on Ipanema Beach

Do you see what I see?

  3. Great pics! Thanks for sharing, it feels like I am there with you. The food looks great! I love the statue of the Virgin Mary displayed in the restaurant. I bet there isn't the "politically correct" police like we have here in the US. Seems like a culture that embraces religious freedom, similar to what you find in Provence and Italy.
