Peru Pt. 1: Cusco- Our culture shock experience

Allie and Nelson at Inca ruins outside of Cusco, Peru

When we arrived in Cusco, Peru we were amazed at what we saw. There were so many people, a fairly large city, and we experienced some culture shock! Women carrying their children on their backs, people walking sheep down the road, and alpacas staring you in the face. It was quite the experience. Its a beautiful city rich in pride and history (and tour companies). We visited old churches built by the Spanish when they conquered Cusco and the Incas in the 1500s. They would tear down the Inca temples and build Catholic churches in their place often leaving the original Inca foundation. We flew high over the Andes, tried homemade ceviche, alpaca, and coca leaf tea, and visited some nearby ruins. Enjoy the pictures! Next to come, a whole post dedicated to Machu Picchu! (too many pictures to fit it in here!)

Our flight from Buenos Aires to Lima over the Andes
Our first ceviche at the guesthouse we stayed at in Lima. Ceviche is fish that is cooked using lemon or lime juice and white wine. Ours was served with shrimp and onions.

Nativity scene at the mall. The little girl, wondering where baby Jesus was, was screaming, "Donde esta el nino!!??"
Its Christmas here too ya know!

Well hello!
Coca leaf tea. This helped us tremendously get used to the altitude. Our first day in Cusco was rough with dizziness and headaches and shortness of breath. This tea did the trick! We drank it so much we got sick of it! PS- Yes it is the plant they make cocaine from. However it takes several thousand leaves to make a small amount of cocaine.
Our Peruvian suite. Nelson worked his magic to upgrade us.
Christmas trees and cacti go hand in hand.
A large plate of steak, rice, and vegetables. Too much to eat. Too cheap! US$2 for each plate.

  1. Allie and Nelson your globe trekking certainly seems to be taking us not only to different countries, cultures and worlds of this century, but traversing us to centuries and people long since past. It's quite curious that many of the cities, communities, and rural areas of Peru, South America and even those among the European countries, still embrace and continue to embed the symbols of Christianity and Christ in their lives today. Secularism doesn't seem to be the norm of the countries you have visited to date. Do you agree? This seems to be the case in some European countries as well. How do you find the churches in SA, are they open to the public, or locked, as is the case with many US churches today? Love the animal shots and the photos of the native Peruvian people. Looking forward to "our" next stop on our around the world trip!
